On Saturday January 22, I did a 4 hour presentation to about 14 adolescents at Morning Star Luteran Church. The presentation was about gambling addiciton and substance abuse and how those things can impact a person's hopes and dreams in a less than positive way. As part of this presentation I shared this video that I found on YouTube. Please check it out and share it with the kids and teens in your life to help them get a different perspective on problem and pathological or addictive gambling. Let me know if you have any questions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2tdCdKqvoU
It was a great week at Peace and Power Counseling. One of our program participants made it two years without gambling and another participant made it one month without gambling.
Both of these are milestones! Are you wondering why these are both significant? Each of these individuals have been working very hard and it is the first time that either of them has made it this long without gambling since starting gambling years ago. It is so important to give ourselves a pat on the back and acknowledge our accomplishments even if they do not seem as big as another person's accomplishments. We are not here to compare, just to be with you during this challenging prcess called recovery. My wish for both of these individuals is continued success in their recovery and for them to know that each of their accomplishments are significant! Peace and Power Counseling is starting an Intensive Outpatient (IOP) Treatment program for gamblers. This program consists of five hours of programming each week. 4 hours of group and 1 hour of individual therapy.

Are you the loved one of a gambler, a professional working with a gambler or family member affected by someone else’s gambling? It might be helpful for you to learn more about gambling as a problem. If you learn more then you will be more confident in approaching the gambler or talking with your clients about their gambling behavior or how to protect themselves from the gambling behavior of others.
Why is learning more about gambling addiction important to me? Between 1-3% of adults have an addiction to gambling what professionals call “pathological gambling” or what Gamblers Anonymous calls “compulsive gambling.” More adolescents are developing a problem with gambling than adults. In Nebraska between 2-4% of adolescents have an addiction to gambling. Those with a gambling problem are more likely to commit suicide than the general population. A study was done in Oklahoma that stated 48% of those in their Gamblers Anonymous program had considered suicide and 13% had made serious attempts at killing themselves. How can I learn more about gambling addiction? Peace and Power Counseling is happy to speak with you individually or in a group setting about gambling addiction and its impact on you and/or those around you. We do these speaking engagements for no charge. For those working with gamblers and/or family members of gamblers in a professional setting as case managers, therapists or other helping professionals, students planning to work in the helping professions, Peace and Power Counseling is offering Free CEU presentations focused on learning more about helping family members of gamblers and older adult gamblers. **Please check out the information previously on this blog about the Collateral Damage and Lost presentations! Have you been thinking about gambling treatment but not sure if you can afford the gas to get into the middle of Omaha from your rural location? I might have the answer for you. Distance treatment is an opportunity to come to an appointment around one time every 4 weeks rather than weekly and still get the benefit of weekly contact. There would be handouts, readings and assignments in between the sessions. There might be email/mail/internet contact in between the sessions. This is not for those living close enough to a treatment facility to meet in person, it is for those who have been wanting to attend treatment but have been talking themselves out of it because of the distance to services. Nebraska has quite a lot of services for those with a gambling problem and their family members but there are sometimes long distances like an hour or more drive between clients and the services they need. Give me a call and you can learn how we can help you with our new distance treatment service. 402-515-7412
It can be scarey to meet a counselor and to start working on changing a behavior that has been such an important part of your life for so long. At Peace and Power Counseling we don't tell anyone they have to stop gambling/shopping etc. We work with our clients toward the goal that he or she sets.
If you are unsure if treatment is the right step for you, please just email or call me with your name and address. I am happy to put some literature in the mail to you, at no cost. I have a workbook that I can send you that will help you decide whether treatment would be helpful or not. I wish you success in your life and I want you to know that Peace and Power Counseling is here to help you when or if you need us.
